Tribute of the Three Cows
This place offers a unique historical ceremony every 13th of July, where an ancient peace treaty is celebrated with a ritual involving the handing over of cows.
Every July 13th, the Stone of San MartÃn hosts the oldest international treaty still in force in Europe. In this annual and perpetual tribute, the people of Baretous deliver three cows to the Roncal Valley. The ceremony seals a commitment to peace through the laying on of hands and the phrase: Pax avant, pax avant, pax avant. The first recorded document dates back to 1375.
