This variant route climbs from Iturbeltza to Aztakarri, passing over the summit of Iturrumburru. The descent from the summit to Aztakarri drops steeply, making the path dangerous during fog, snow, or ice. In such conditions, the GR 12 route provides a better alternative via Iturbeltza-the fountain- Etxamendiko Etxola-Egurtzako Lepoa-Aztakarri. This option is slightly longer but follows flatter and more comfortable terrain.
